Emma
April 24, 2009

The picture above of my sweet Emma was taken in 2008. (She had been Greta in rescue, but I renamed her.) Diagnosed early with a congenital heart condition, she had several happy, healthy years with us before she became blind and deaf. And even then, she compensated and continued to enjoy her walks, treats, chews, and being petted, even though she couldn't play fetch anymore. But beginning last fall, she showed increasing signs of dementia, and, by April of this year, it had become very difficult to care for her, and I had to have her euthanized. She was sweet and beautiful as ever, to her last hour.

Emma was always stoic in the face of her health problems, as she had undoubtedly been facing life in a puppy mill, followed by complete abandonment. When healthy, she was a delightful, loving companion, beautiful outside and in. She really distinguished herself in her obedience class. She was repeatedly singled out for praise by the instructor, and loved participating in an activity on her own with me, and without my other dog. My other dog Teddy, however, really loved Emma, even though, because of her puppy mill background, she did not know how to respond to his bids to play. And Emma loved us so very well. We both miss her everyday, and I'll be forever grateful to Cocker Spaniel Rescue for helping us find each other.

Thank you,
Lisa Pearson
